Several European leaders, along with Canada, on Wednesday welcomed the newly announced ceasefire between the US and Iran, calling for a “substantive negotiated settlement.”
Leaders of France, Italy, Germany, UK, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, issued a joint statement in which they welcomed the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran while thanking Pakistan and all other partners for their facilitating efforts.
“The goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means. We strongly encourage quick progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement,” leaders said.
Reiterating the need to protect the civilian population in Iran and ensure security in the region, leaders also noted that the agreement could avert a severe global energy crisis.
“We call upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. Our Governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement added.
