A driver has been arrested following a fatal head-on collision on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, which claimed the life of a woman.

The Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the crash occurred at the Ilaje inward Iyana Oworo area of the bridge.

According to him, the accident involved two Toyota Sienna vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.

Taofiq attributed the collision to reckless driving and excessive speeding, adding that LASTMA operatives on routine patrol responded promptly and implemented traffic control measures to prevent further incidents.

“The harrowing incident involved a catastrophic head-on collision between two Toyota Sienna vehicles. The severity of the impact underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding,” he said.

He confirmed that the crash led to the death of an adult woman, while her 30-year-old daughter, who was in the same vehicle, survived.

The remains of the deceased were evacuated by emergency responders.

Taofiq further disclosed that one of the drivers fled the scene, while the other was apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police.

“The incident resulted in the loss of one female adult, a mother, while her 30-year-old daughter miraculously survived the collision. One of the drivers absconded from the scene, while the second driver was promptly apprehended and handed over to the police,” he added.

The arrested driver is currently in police custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, warned motorists against reckless driving and urged strict adherence to speed limits.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority remains unwavering in its commitment to the preservation of lives and the maintenance of orderly traffic flow across the state. Motorists are advised to eschew excessive speeding and exercise caution at all times,” he said.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Metro had earlier reported that three persons lost their lives in a separate crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involving a car and a motorcycle, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps.
