…Calls for Integrity and Professionalism in Civil Service

    By Gift Chapi-Odekina, Abuja

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, James Faleke, has emphasized the importance of integrity, professionalism and adherence to due process in the civil service, describing public servants as critical to effective governance and national development.

Faleke made the remarks in Abuja during the launch of The Nigerian Legislature: A Practical Guide for Lawmakers, a book authored by retiring National Assembly official, Oscar Okoro, as part of activities marking his 60th birthday and retirement from public service.

Speaking with journalists at the event, the lawmaker said civil servants play a vital role in government operations, noting that elected officials often depend on technocrats for policy implementation and institutional continuity.

According to him, strict adherence to established procedures and regulations is essential for strengthening governance and improving public service delivery.

He urged civil servants to remain committed to due process and professional standards in the discharge of their responsibilities, stressing that effective institutions are built on accountability and respect for laid-down rules.

Faleke also commended Okoro for his years of service in the National Assembly, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose commitment to duty earned him the respect of colleagues and lawmakers.

Also speaking, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Abubakar Saidu, praised Okoro’s professionalism and dedication throughout his career.

Similarly, House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, encouraged public servants to uphold values such as integrity, diligence and commitment to service.

Rotimi noted that experienced officers contribute significantly to institutional memory and the effective functioning of public institutions.

In his remarks, Okoro attributed his successful career to hard work, humility, patience and continuous learning. He advised younger professionals to remain disciplined and committed to personal and professional development.

The retired official said he plans to return to legal practice and consultancy while devoting more time to mentoring younger professionals.

Reviewing the book, Kabir Danladi of the Department of Public Law, Ahmadu Bello University, described the publication as a useful resource for understanding Nigeria’s legislative system.

According to him, the 335-page book examines the constitutional foundations of the National Assembly, its structures, legislative procedures, oversight functions and relationship with other arms of government.

He said the publication would be valuable to lawmakers, public officials, students and others interested in Nigeria’s legislative and governance processes.
