The recent decision by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to deploy Deputy Inspectors-General of Police to their respective geopolitical zones is being widely viewed by security stakeholders as one of the most strategic policing reforms in recent years.

Security experts believe that placing DIGs directly within their geopolitical zones will significantly improve the speed of decision-making and operational response, while fostering stronger relationships between the police and local communities.
Many of the deployed DIGs have spent years serving within their respective regions in various operational, investigative, intelligence, and command capacities. They understand the terrain, local dynamics, cultural sensitivities, and security challenges unique to their zones.
This familiarity is expected to enhance trust and cooperation between communities and law enforcement agencies.
More importantly, the deployment aligns closely with the principles of community policing, a model that emphasises partnership between citizens and security agencies in preventing and combating crime.
Under the new arrangement, the DIGs will work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, religious institutions, and other stakeholders to obtain firsthand intelligence and address local security concerns before they escalate.
The objective is simple: bring leadership closer to the field and make security management more proactive than reactive.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen intelligence-led policing, which remains one of the cornerstones of modern crime prevention.
Rather than relying solely on reports reaching Force Headquarters in Abuja, senior officers stationed within the regions will be able to directly assess developments, gather intelligence, identify emerging threats, and make immediate recommendations for intervention.
Information gathered from communities will subsequently form part of strategic security assessments at the highest levels of police management, ensuring that operational decisions are informed by real-time realities on the ground.
Another key component of the reform is the introduction of what the IGP has termed “Handshake Patrols” between neighbouring states.
The concept is based on a simple reality: criminals do not respect state boundaries.
For years, criminal elements have exploited jurisdictional gaps by committing crimes in one state and escaping into another, often frustrating law enforcement efforts.
Under the new directive, Commissioners of Police are expected to establish coordinated patrols along border communities and major highways linking neighbouring states.
They are also required to maintain regular communication, share intelligence, and conduct joint operations whenever necessary.
The strategy is expected to create a seamless security network that denies criminals safe havens and reduces opportunities for cross-border criminal activities.
Many security analysts believe that if effectively implemented, the combination of regional leadership oversight, enhanced intelligence gathering, community engagement, and inter-state operational collaboration could significantly reduce incidents of kidnapping and violent crimes across the country.
The deployment also reflects the broader vision of the current IGP, whose policing philosophy has consistently emphasised intelligence, technology, accountability, operational effectiveness, and public partnership.
Since assuming office, IGP Disu has championed reforms aimed at modernising the Nigeria Police Force and repositioning it to respond effectively to contemporary security challenges.
