Gas Exports Climb 13% As Nigeria Strengthens Non-Oil Revenue Base

Nigeria’s natural gas export earnings rose to $2.53 billion in the first quarter of 2026, reinforcing the sector’s growing importance as the country seeks to expand foreign exchange sources beyond crude oil.

Recent data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that proceeds from gas exports rose to $2.53 billion during the quarter.

The increase highlights the expanding contribution of the natural gas sector to Nigeria’s export earnings at a time when policymakers are seeking to broaden the country’s revenue streams and improve external sector stability.

As global demand for cleaner energy sources continues to grow, Nigeria has intensified efforts to position its vast gas reserves as a major driver of economic growth.

The country holds one of the largest proven gas reserves in Africa and has identified the resource as a critical component of its long-term energy and industrial development strategy.

The latest performance contributed to an improvement in Nigeria’s trade position during the quarter. Export receipts from gas added momentum to merchandise trade earnings and helped strengthen the country’s external balances.

The CBN data showed a significant expansion in the surplus recorded under the goods account, indicating that export receipts outpaced import payments by a wider margin than in previous periods.

The stronger balance reflects improved earnings from key export commodities, including natural gas.

Analysts said the continued growth in gas exports demonstrates the benefits of ongoing investments in processing facilities, transportation infrastructure and export-oriented projects across the energy value chain.

The Federal Government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of developing the gas industry as part of efforts to diversify the economy and create a more resilient source of foreign exchange earnings.

Several policy initiatives have been introduced in recent years to encourage investment, boost production capacity and improve the commercial viability of gas projects.

Industry stakeholders believe that increased gas exports could provide a sustainable complement to crude oil revenues, particularly as global energy markets evolve and countries seek lower-carbon energy alternatives.

Beyond export earnings, the development of the gas sector is also expected to support industrialization, power generation and job creation within the domestic economy, further strengthening its strategic importance.

With additional infrastructure projects underway and production capacity gradually expanding, Nigeria appears poised to increase its presence in global gas markets while advancing its broader objective of building a more diversified and stable export economy.

The latest figures reinforce the growing significance of natural gas in Nigeria’s economic landscape and highlight the sector’s potential to serve as a major pillar of future revenue growth.
