Mahrez Sets World Cup Record as Algeria Keep Knockout Hopes Alive With Comeback Win Over Jordan

Algeria kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive and celebrated a historic milestone for Riyad Mahrez after fighting back to beat Jordan 2-1 in San Francisco.

The Desert Foxes recovered from a first-half setback to claim a crucial victory that eliminated World Cup debutants Jordan and kept Algeria firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

The match was particularly memorable for Mahrez, who made his first World Cup start since 2014 and marked the occasion by helping to inspire Algeria’s comeback.

Jordan stunned Algeria in the 36th minute when Nizar Al Rashdan curled a superb effort into the net after Ramiz Zerrouki lost possession. It was another historic moment for Jordan, as Al Rashdan’s strike became one of the country’s most memorable goals on their first World Cup appearance.

Algeria dominated possession throughout the contest but struggled to break down Jordan’s disciplined defence. Mahrez came close to equalising before the break, only to be denied by goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila.

The pressure eventually paid off in the second half. Nadhir Benbouali headed home from a Mahrez corner in the 69th minute to bring Algeria level. The assist added another significant achievement to Mahrez’s international career as the veteran winger once again delivered on football’s biggest stage.

Algeria completed the comeback eight minutes from time when Amine Gouiri reacted quickest to a loose ball following another dangerous corner and hooked home the winning goal.

The victory ensured Algeria remained in contention for qualification ahead of their final group match against Austria.

Several records and milestones were set during the encounter. Mahrez became one of the few Algerian players to start World Cup matches 12 years apart, having featured in both the 2014 and 2026 tournaments. His assist also made him a key contributor in Algeria’s fight for survival at another World Cup.

For Jordan, despite the defeat, the tournament has provided several historic firsts. The nation scored again on the global stage through Al Rashdan and pushed one of Africa’s strongest teams all the way before eventually falling short.

Algeria will now turn their attention to a decisive clash against Austria, while Jordan conclude their maiden World Cup campaign against group leaders Argentina.

The comeback victory may yet prove a turning point for Algeria, whose experienced stars delivered when it mattered most to keep their World Cup dream alive.
