AZ Alkmaar have built an enviable reputation for developing intelligent, technically accomplished footballers, and Kasper Boogaard appears to be the latest academy graduate moving towards prominence.
Born in Den Burg on the island of Texel in January 2006, Boogaard began playing for local club Texel ’94 before joining AZ’s academy in 2017. He signed his first professional contract in 2022 and made his Jong AZ debut against Roda JC in February 2024.
His progress accelerated during the following two seasons. After making 17 Eerste Divisie appearances in 2024–25, Boogaard became a considerably more influential player for Jong AZ in 2025–26, contributing four goals and eight assists across 23 league appearances.
That increased attacking production was particularly encouraging because Boogaard’s preferred position is defensive midfield. Standing around 1.87 metres tall, he has the physical dimensions to compete centrally but is not simply a destructive ball-winner.
Boogaard is most comfortable operating as the deepest midfielder, receiving possession from the centre-backs and helping his team progress through pressure. His passing range, positional awareness and ability to use either foot allow him to change the direction of an attack without needing several touches.
Defensively, he reads developing situations well and is generally proactive when stepping forward to challenge an opponent. He can protect the space in front of the defence, although his future may be as a modern number six who contributes in possession rather than as a specialist midfield enforcer.
Boogaard’s performances earned him a new AZ contract running until 2029. He was also part of the Netherlands squad that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
His senior breakthrough arrived during the 2025–26 season. Boogaard made his official AZ debut away to Crystal Palace in the UEFA Conference League in November 2025, before making his first Eredivisie start against PSV Eindhoven. He was permanently promoted to AZ’s first-team squad in January 2026 and finished the league campaign with two assists from just over 700 minutes.
Reports in June subsequently linked Boogaard with Bologna. The Serie A club would represent an understandable potential destination, having previously recruited Sam Beukema and Jesper Karlsson from AZ.
However, remaining in Alkmaar for another full season may be equally valuable. Regular Eredivisie football would give him the opportunity to improve his speed of decision-making, defensive consistency and effectiveness against more athletic opponents.
The most suitable recent comparison is former Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer. Like Wieffer, Boogaard is a tall Dutch holding midfielder whose value comes from anticipation, clean distribution and tactical discipline rather than spectacular individual skill.
Boogaard is still developing and should not yet be expected to control matches at the highest level. Nevertheless, his combination of size, two-footed passing and experience in AZ’s demanding development system makes him an intriguing prospect.
Whether his next step comes in Alkmaar, Bologna or elsewhere, Boogaard has the profile of another Dutch midfielder who could quietly develop into a valuable player at European level.
