NewsOnline Nigeria reports that United States President Donald Trump has warned that he could become the “last Republican president” if Democratic Senate candidate Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed wins the Michigan Senate race, accusing the Democrat of campaigning to abolish the Senate filibuster.
Trump made the remarks in a post on Truth Social on Thursday after El-Sayed secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan.
According to the U.S. president, El-Sayed has made eliminating the Senate filibuster one of the central pillars of his campaign.
Addressing Republican senators, Trump argued that scrapping the legislative rule would hand Democrats a major political advantage, enabling them to expand their influence in Congress and reshape the federal judiciary.
“For our Great Republican Senators, friends of mine ‘all,’ please be advised that the Communist Dumocrat Senate Candidate from Michigan, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, is touting, as perhaps his single most important point, the Termination of the Filibuster,” Trump wrote.
He continued: “If he succeeds, the Dumocrats will gain 4 Senators, 8 Congressmen, many Electoral and Popular Votes, a stacked Supreme Court with 23 Justices, and I will be, sadly, despite the great job we are doing, the last Republican President!”
Trump’s comments come as debate over the future of the Senate filibuster continues to divide U.S. lawmakers.
The filibuster is a longstanding Senate procedural rule that typically requires 60 votes to advance most legislation, making bipartisan support necessary for many bills.
While several Democrats have advocated abolishing or reforming the rule to allow legislation to pass with a simple majority, others within the party have opposed eliminating it, arguing that it protects minority rights in the Senate.
El-Sayed’s nomination has renewed the political debate over the filibuster, with Republicans warning that its removal could significantly alter the balance of power in Congress.
