The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has ordered a probe into the alleged sexual misconduct levelled against a yet-to-be-identified lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts.

The alleged sexual misconduct was brought to the attention of the school management after a viral video surfaced online on Saturday, in which some students of the institution were seen physically assaulting and rough-handling the lecturer on the school premises after he was caught allegedly molesting a female student.

Videos of the incident, which occurred within the University environment on Saturday, have since gone viral on various social media platforms and have attracted widespread reactions and criticism, with calls for a thorough investigation.

Following the incident, the management of the institution expressed deep sadness and strongly condemned the resort to violence, self-help, or any form of jungle justice under any circumstance.

In a press statement on Saturday, the Director, Information and Public Relations, UNIZIK, Aloysius Attah, said the university authorities have directed an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident.

Attah said the investigation is to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement read, “The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has received reports of the alleged physical assault and attack on a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student of the University.

“Videos of the incident, which occurred within the University environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, have since gone viral on various social media platforms.

“Management is deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident and strongly condemns the resort to violence, self-help, or any form of jungle justice under any circumstance.

“The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, has consistently reaffirmed the University’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and all forms of inappropriate behaviour.

“At the same time, Management emphasises that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process. No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment.”

“Given the seriousness of the matter, the University Management has directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.”

According to him, the matter is currently under full review, with the appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.

He emphasised that the University remains firmly committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of its staff and students and will continue to take decisive action against any conduct that violates these principles.

He added that further pronouncements and developments on the matter shall be communicated in due course.
