FG has announced N50,000 Cash Relief for vulnerable Nigerians under NERSI Programme.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has announced a N50,000 cash relief intervention for vulnerable Nigerian households to cushion the effects of rising living costs under its National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the initiative in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, October 30, 2026, describing it as a presidential programme designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of vulnerable Nigerians.

Doro said the intervention was introduced in response to global food inflation and rising prices of essential goods, which have continued to put pressure on household incomes.

According to the minister, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 to help them meet essential needs and manage the increasing cost of living.

“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” he said.

He explained that the programme would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living, with beneficiaries notified directly before any adjustments were introduced.

The minister added that the ministry was working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure, timely and transparent disbursement of the funds.

Doro explained that beneficiaries would receive text messages from approved service providers seeking their consent before payments were made into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

He stressed that Nigerians would not be required to apply, pay registration fees or register through agents to benefit from the intervention.

The minister also warned citizens against fraudsters, advising beneficiaries not to disclose their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) or other sensitive banking details to anyone.

“If you are unsure about any message, or anyone asks you for money, call the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222,” he said.

Doro described NERSI as complementary to existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes, noting that it was designed to strengthen household resilience and promote economic stability.

He added that the intervention aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the programme with dignity, transparency and accountability.

However, information on the Federal Government’s official NERSI website describes the N50,000 payment as a one-off grant to selected beneficiaries, rather than a monthly cash transfer.

The programme’s website states that beneficiaries will be selected from verified national identity records and the National Social Register, with payments made through approved digital financial service providers, including ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo PSB and NairaGram.

It also explains that beneficiaries must consent to participate before their mobile wallets are credited.

The difference between the minister’s description of the intervention as a monthly payment and the official programme website’s description of it as a one-off grant raises questions about the payment frequency and implementation details.

In a related development, the World Bank disclosed that the Federal Government had disbursed N658.9bn in direct cash transfers to 10.46 million poor and vulnerable households as of September 2026.

The figures were contained in the global financial institution’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update, titled ‘Beyond the Federal Purse: How Higher Revenues Shaped State Priorities’.

According to the report, the government used biometric and digital verification systems to identify beneficiaries and facilitate payments under its direct cash transfer programme.

The World Bank, however, said the effectiveness of the intervention would depend on expanding coverage, improving the adequacy of payments and ensuring regular disbursements.

It called for a transition from emergency financial assistance towards a sustainable social protection system supported by dedicated budget allocations at both federal and state levels.

The institution also recommended gradually increasing government funding for social protection programmes to ensure vulnerable households receive consistent financial support.

It maintained that cash transfers and other social protection measures could help cushion households against economic pressures but stressed that broader coverage, adequate payments and continuity would be necessary to improve their impact on household welfare.
