Nigerian basketball player Stephanie Okechukwu, who stands at 7 feet 1 inch, has made her debut for Texas Tech University, becoming the tallest player to feature in an NCAA women’s basketball game.

The 21-year-old achieved the milestone on Thursday, November 5, 2026, when Texas Tech defeated Charlotte 64-37 in its opening game of the 2026-27 season.

Okechukwu recorded six points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes, becoming the first seven-footer to feature in an NCAA women’s basketball game.

Her height surpasses the previous record holders, who were listed at 6 feet 11 inches, making her a standout figure in the history of the competition.

How she came into the spotlight

Okechukwu attracted widespread attention on January 2, 2026, when Texas Tech announced her signing, describing her as the tallest women’s college basketball player in the history of the sport.

The university had been recruiting her for about two years before she joined the Lady Raiders. However, she did not feature during the 2025-26 season as she awaited clearance on her NCAA eligibility.

She eventually made her much-anticipated debut in November 2026, marking the beginning of her college playing career.

    Who is Stephanie Okechukwu?

According to a player profile published on Texas Tech University’s website, Okechukwu was born on February 17 and is the daughter of Livinus and Patience Ndidi.

The profile states that she attended Fukuchiyama Seibi in Kyoto, Japan, and plans to major in business at Texas Tech.

She speaks English, Igbo and Japanese and comes from a family of six siblings: Calitus, Juliana, Perpetual, Veronica, Precious and Clara.

    Life beyond basketball

According to the university profile, Okechukwu enjoys swimming, reading, creating social media posts and expressing herself.

She is also interested in personal growth, self-awareness, music, meaningful experiences, connecting with people, thoughtful gestures and aesthetics, as well as growing in her relationship with God.

    Her dreams and ambitions

Beyond making a name for herself in college basketball, Okechukwu hopes to play professionally while continuing to travel around the world.

She also plans to establish a basketball camp for young girls in her hometown in Nigeria.

Her historic debut at Texas Tech has put her name in the record books and drawn attention to Nigeria’s presence in international basketball.
