Olumide Oworu slams Nigerians over corruption hypocrisy

Nigerian actor and politician Olumide Oworu has criticised both governance and public attitudes toward corruption, arguing that the treatment of petty offenders compared to powerful looters reflects a deeper societal problem.

Oworu made the remarks in an interview on The Clarity Zone Podcast, which was shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, where he questioned the visible impact of government policies on the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

“How many things can we see on a day-to-day basis that actually show this government being intentional with the welfare of the average Nigerian?” he asked.

The actor contrasted the public reaction to minor crimes with the response to large-scale corruption cases.

“Somebody stole a generator. How much is gen? You want to kill him. Then you see that one animal swallowed how many billions, and we’re chilling.”

According to Oworu, the fact that headlines about missing public funds often circulate without serious consequences reflects a troubling societal reality.

“The fact that that kind of headline is even printable shows you where we are as a society,” he said.

He further criticised the tendency for mobs to attack suspected petty thieves, while individuals accused of looting public resources are sometimes celebrated.

“Somebody has gone and stolen something on the road, and you beat this person, light fire, almost lynch this guy. You want to burn him. But the people who are plundering your generational commonwealth, you see them, and you are still hailing them. Where is that energy?”

He argued that the true measure of any government should be the condition of the average citizen.

“The success of any government is the average person. If the average person cannot say, ‘we know say e hard but them dey try,’ then I’m sorry, it’s not good enough.”

He also questioned the value of educational outcomes in Nigeria, noting that despite fewer disruptions in universities, many graduates still struggle to secure employment.

“But now, what did they really learn in school? And then they come out and graduate to which job?” he said.
