Can Nigeria’s 2023 reforms still be turned into a development dividend?, By David Okelue Ugwunta
….the path forward is clear: establish credibility (audit), protect citizens (PSIA), discipline spending (savings regime and national productive investments), fix structural constraints (energy transition), and sustain trust (compact). Skipping this sequence risks turning reform into a cycle of pain without progress. The question is no longer whether reform was necessary, but whether Nigeria will turn it into real, measurable progress and economic rebirth. From Subsidy Removal to Debt Traps Nigeria’s age-long fuel subsidy regimes resisted reforms, drained public finances, fuelled corruption, encouraged smuggling, and undermined local refining. Repeated reform attempts failed to resolve the underlying distortions. Jonathan’s 2012 attempt was…
Sandor Toth has been running his pub in a small village in the hilly northeast of Hungary for 43 years, witnessing the collapse of communism and since 2010 four victories by the lawmaker for Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party in his constituency. Toth, 72, has voted for Fidesz each time. Since last year his pub has been awarded 3 million forints ($9,000) in grants from Orban’s “pub programme” which allowed him to install new windows and air conditioning. Hundreds of pubs got the free state grants under the government slogan that they are “the soul of the villages”. Poorer rural areas…
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday led heads of security agencies to Plateau for an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in the state. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Thursday. Mrs Anele, a colonel, said that the visit was part of renewed efforts to restore calm, strengthen operational coordination and entrench lasting peace in communities affected by recent security challenges across the state. She said Mr Shaibu, a lieutenant-general, was received by Governor Caleb Muftwang, in…
Philip Otele has described his first appearance for the Nigeria national football team as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. The Hamburger SV winger, currently on loan from FC Basel, made his senior debut on Tuesday in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Jordan national football team in Antalya. He came on late in the match, replacing Frank Onyeka. Otele’s call up had come as a surprise after he was initially included in Éric Chelle’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but missed out on the final list earlier in the year. “I am very happy to be here;…
A senior Russian diplomat accused Ukraine on Thursday of timing the oil cutoff to coincide with Hungary’s upcoming general elections as part of an effort to interfere in the vote. Speaking in an interview with the Russian state news agency RIA, head of the 3d European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Oleg Tyapkin said Hungary was “justifiably outraged” after Kyiv halted oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline. “It can hardly be considered a mere coincidence that this provocative act was organized precisely now, during the final stage of the election campaign,” he noted. The bugging of Hungarian Minister of…
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus president condemns attack on citizens by groups from Greek Cypriot Administration
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman released a statement Wednesday condemning an attack by certain groups from the Greek Cypriot Administration who targeted civilians sitting in a park near the border area dividing the capital Lefkosa. Erhurman also called on the UN and the Greek Cypriot Administration’s leadership to “urgently launch an investigation into the incident.” In the statement, Erhurman recalled that around 13.30 pm (1030GMT), stones and explosives were thrown by a group gathered on the Greek Cypriot Administration side at TRNC citizens in Yigitler Bastion. “This attack took place in an area that bears responsibility…
Hopes for a swift end to the Middle East war faded on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed more aggressive strikes on Iran, sending oil prices sharply up again in a blow to consumers around the world. Stocks slid and the dollar gained after Trump said military operations would be intensified without offering the timeline that investors had sought for ending hostilities against Iran. “We’re going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages where they belong,” Trump said in a Wednesday evening prime-time speech. Trump said the U.S. would achieve its…
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a televised speech on Wednesday night that the U.S. military had nearly accomplished its goals in Iran, but offered no clear timeline for ending the monthlong war and vowed to bomb the country back into the “Stone Ages.” Facing a war-wary American public, sliding approval ratings and pressure from some allies to outline his war aims in more precise and consistent terms, Trump said the U.S. had destroyed Iran’s navy and air force, and crippled its ballistic missile and nuclear programs. But he declined to lay out a concrete plan to wind down the war,…
Students across Russia are being offered large financial incentives to join drone units fighting in Ukraine as operators and engineers, while companies in Russia’s central Ryazan region have been given quotas to sign up workers for the army, documents show. The recruitment effort, which comes as Russian forces continue to grind forwards on the battlefield in Ukraine and as U.S.-brokered peace talks are on ice due to the Iran war, suggests Moscow is diversifying its push to replenish its army’s ranks in what is the fifth year of its war. But it is not part of a general mobilisation drive, something the Kremlin…
