Unlike Umuahia, the Abia state capital, which literally shots down at 9pm every night, Abakaliki, the centre point of political administration in neighbouring Abia state, is the direct opposite. A night out in the historical but evolving new city is not only enchanting, compelling, buzzing, heaving, all at once, it is also a truly golden experience. That perhaps explains why those familiar with the city describe as the Paradise of the South East. As this reporter found out, Abakiliki at night, as it is obviously in day time, seems very unaware of or unaffected by the plethora of security breaches…
The first official trip to China by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz comes as his country’s manufacturers face increasing pressure from Chinese competitors and as U.S. President Donald Trump shakes up a post-World War II global order that Europe has long depended on. Merz is set to arrive Wednesday for a two-day visit, the latest in a parade of world leaders to visit Beijing ahead of a trip by Trump in about five weeks. Besides Germany’s growing trade deficit with China, Merz is expected to raise Chinese backing for Russia’s position in the war in Ukraine, though no change from the Chinese side is foreseen. China…
Maria Dolores Aguirre’s family corner store has lived off tourism that has flowed into her charming cobblestoned town of Tapalpa, tucked away in the mountains of Jalisco state. That was until gunshots erupted and helicopters flew overhead as the Mexican army killed the country’s most powerful drug lord, just a few kilometers (miles) from her home. Now, the 50-year-old Aguirre worries that the bloodshed will deal a blow to her livelihood and change towns like hers. It is something many in the western Mexican state are grappling with, from its Pacific Ocean beaches to its capital Guadalajara that will host matches in June…

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged Ukraine’s allies on Tuesday to sustain their support for its four-year-old battle against Russian invasion, as divisions among its European partners overshadowed commemorations of the start of the conflict. European Union nations had hoped to agree a fresh package of sanctions against Russia as well as a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine but Hungary, which maintains close ties with Moscow, had on Monday kept up its veto on both. Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia accuse Kyiv of deliberately blocking their supplies of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline, which Ukraine says it is trying to repair…
