Israeli strike kills Christian party official in Lebanon, widening divisions over Hezbollah
An Israeli strike on an apartment east of Beirut late on Sunday killed a local official from a Christian political party, sharpening internal divides over Hezbollah as Israel’s strikes expand to new parts of the country. The war raging in Lebanon over the past month has deepened fractures between supporters of Hezbollah and those who blame the Iran-backed group for igniting a new conflict with Israel just 15 months after the last one. On Sunday, an Israeli strike hit an apartment in Ain Saadeh, a predominantly Christian town in the hills east of Beirut, killing a man and two women, Lebanon’s health…
Spain’s ruling Socialist Party has gained voter support amid Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s staunch opposition to the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, while far-right Vox, which supports the offensive, has seen a decline, two surveys published on Monday showed. Sanchez has emerged as one of the most vocal Western leaders criticising what he calls an illegal and reckless war, closing Spanish airspace to U.S. planes involved in the strikes and banning them from using jointly operated military bases in southern Spain. Vox – closely allied with U.S. President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement – has harshly criticised Sanchez’s stance. A survey by state pollster CIS showed last month…
The head of the intelligence organisation of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed on Monday in a “terrorist attack by the American-Zionist (Israeli) enemy”, Iranian media said, citing a statement by the Guards. Majid Khademi, who becomes the latest key figure killed in U.S.-Israeli air strikes, took over in 2025 after Israeli air strikes killed his predecessor. He spent decades in intelligence and counter-espionage roles while rising through Iran’s security apparatus. Before his appointment, Khademi headed the Guards’ Intelligence Protection Organisation, charged with internal surveillance and counter-intelligence, and held senior roles in Iran’s defence ministry. The IRGC intelligence arm is…
Chelsea have reached an agreement over personal terms with midfielder Valentin Barco ahead of a potential move from Strasbourg this summer. The Blues are expected to reshuffle their midfield options at the end of the season. Enzo Fernandez is pushing for a summer exit and his wish could be granted for the right price. Similarly, Romeo Lavia could be shown the exit door too. The Belgian has suffered numerous injuries during his time at Chelsea, and the club could cut their losses on him. Amidst this, Fabrizio Romano claims that Barco has agreed on personal terms and talks are underway…
Nollywood actress, Lilian Afegbai, popularly known as Lily Afe, has apologised to the organisers of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award over her crash after not being nominated in the 12th edition of the awards. In a post she made on her X (formerly Twitter) page on Saturday, the actress said her apology should have come earlier and her previous tweet should not have been made. She wrote, “This apology should have come earlier, That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. “It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who…
As Hungary heads towards a pivotal election, voters who came of age under Prime Minister Viktor Orban have emerged as a key group driving support for the opposition, with some saying they will leave the country if the veteran leader is re-elected. Orban, 62, a eurosceptic nationalist, is facing the biggest threat to his 16-year grip on power, with most opinion polls showing centre-right rival Peter Magyar and his Tisza Party on course to defeat him in Sunday’s election. The media-savvy Magyar, 45, is proving an attractive alternative for many younger voters disenchanted with Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party, sociologists and pollsters say. “Fidesz’s thinking no longer…
The four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis II mission entered the moon’s gravitational sphere of influence early Monday morning as they cruised along a path that will soon take them over the shadowed, lunar far side to become the farthest-flying humans in history. The Artemis II crew, flying in their Orion capsule since launching from Florida last week, are due to awake around 10:50 a.m. ET Monday for their sixth flight day. By 7:05 p.m., they will reach the mission’s maximum distance from Earth of roughly 252,757 miles, 4,102 miles beyond the record held by the Apollo 13 crew for 56…
Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun leaves on Tuesday for China and a potential meeting with President Xi Jinping on what she says is a peace mission as Beijing makes a renewed push to convince Taiwanese to support “reunification”. Cheng, chairwoman of the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan’s largest opposition party, is travelling at a time of increased Chinese military pressure on Taiwan, which Beijing views as its own territory, and as the opposition-dominated parliament stalls a government plan for $40 billion in extra defence spending. The KMT and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have released duelling social media messages ahead of the trip, using…
Iran parliament speaker warns Trump against escalation, calls for respecting Iranian rights
Iran’s parliament speaker warned US President Donald Trump Sunday against further escalation, saying Washington’s actions risk dragging the US into a “living hell.” “Your reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living HELL for every single family, and our whole region is going to burn because you insist on following (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s commands,” Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said on US social media company X. “You won’t gain anything through war crimes,” the speaker said. “The only real solution is respecting the rights of the Iranian people and ending this dangerous game.” Trump threatened early Sunday to…
Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Sunday that Kyiv’s forces have regained control of 12 settlements since the end of January.
