The AIDS Healthcare Foundation has called for increased budgetary allocation to the health sector, particularly for HIV/AIDS and TB treatment, amid significant reductions in international donor funding. Senior Advocacy and Marketing Manager, AHF-Nigeria, Steve Aborisade, made the call during an advocacy meeting with the Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday in Lokoja. Aborisade highlighted the progress made in HIV/AIDS treatment in Nigeria and advocated for effective partnerships. He emphasised the need for collaboration between implementing partners, civil society organisations, and the government to mobilise local resources and sustain the gains made. Aborisade warned that without conscious efforts to allocate…
Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson could snub Manchester United to join Manchester City during the summer transfer window. The Englishman is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and he is widely expected to leave the Tricky Trees. Man City have already communicated their interest to the player’s agents, but reports claim that Man Utd are likewise keen on his services. Journalist Andy Mitten has now revealed that Anderson is more likely to end up with Man City rather than Man Utd at the end of the season. Both clubs could offer the midfielder with Champions League…
The Miss Nigeria Organisation has issued an official statement regarding the viral video showing veteran actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and a young presenter who asked her to introduce herself at the red carpet of the 46th Miss Nigeria Patrons & Board Dinner. According to the organisation in a statement on Tuesday, said the media representative involved in the clip was not invited to the private event and had no official affiliation with the dinner. “First and foremost, we wish to publicly extend our sincerest apologies to Omotola for the discomfort she experienced. She is a deeply valued member of the Miss…
The Pentagon said on Wednesday it had reached framework agreements with BAE (BAES.L), opens new tab, Lockheed (LMT.N), opens new tab and Honeywell(HON.O), opens new tab to boost production of defense systems and munitions as part of its shift to “wartime footing.” Under the deals, Honeywell Aerospace will “surge production of critical components for America’s munitions stockpile,” as part of a $500 million multi-year investment, the Pentagon said. BAE Systems and Lockheed Martin will also quadruple production of seekers for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor, while a new framework agreement with Lockheed will accelerate production of its Precision Strike Missile, the…
The Western allies trying to negotiate a way to protect the Strait of Hormuz for energy shipping face a stark reality: a similar effort in the Red Sea that started years earlier cost billions of dollars and ultimately failed against Yemen’s Houthis. The costly Red Sea experience – four ships sunk, more than $1 billion in weapons expended, and a route that the shipping industry still largely avoids – looms over the more complex Strait of Hormuz, the shipping artery used by roughly a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supply and now blocked by Iran, a more formidable adversary…
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is expected to hand in her coalition government’s resignation on Wednesday after suffering a massive election defeat, but could still emerge as leader of a new cabinet in the coming weeks. Frederiksen’s Social Democratic Party had its worst election since 1903 on Tuesday, winning just 38 seats in the 179-seat parliament – down from 50 four years ago – amid voter concerns over migration, a cost-of-living crisis and welfare. Such domestic policy issues overshadowed the support for Frederiksen’s defiant stance toward U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated ambitions to acquire Denmark’s semi-autonomous territory Greenland, analysts said. NEITHER BLOC…
Taiwan fears China will exploit the distraction of the United States by its war in the Middle East, with state media citing examples from the conflict to cast doubt on the efficiency of U.S. weapons the island would use to repel any invasion. One of the world’s biggest potential flashpoints, democratically governed Taiwan faces growing military pressure from China, which views the island as its own territory, around which Beijing held its latest war games in December. Taiwan officials say Beijing’s resumption, since March 14 and 15, of large-scale air force incursions near Taiwan after an unusual drop-off, show China wants to…
British police said they arrested two men in connection with the suspected antisemitic arson attack on four Jewish community ambulances in north London earlier this week. Police said on Wednesday the men, aged 47 and 45, were arrested at addresses in north west London and central London respectively, and were being held in custody. The ambulances were set on fire in the early hours of Monday morning in an attack which British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called a “deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack”. No injuries were reported. Police, who had previously said they were looking into a possible link to Iran, said…
Turkey “is playing a role passing messages” between Iran and the U.S. to encourage de-escalation and direct negotiations, Harun Armagan, vice chair of foreign affairs for President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party, told Reuters on Wednesday. He did not elaborate on the messages but said they were also being conveyed to Gulf nations, which have been caught up in the widening regional war sparked by the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran. Iran’s military on Wednesday rejected President Donald Trump’s assertion that the United States was in negotiations to end the war. NATO member Turkey had sought to mediate U.S.-Iran talks before the attacks began nearly…
