Hong Kong court overturns China critic Jimmy Lai’s fraud conviction in rare legal victory
Pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai’s fraud conviction and prison sentence were overturned by a Hong Kong court on Thursday, in a surprise legal decision that comes soon after Lai was jailed for 20 years on a separate national security charge. Judges Jeremy Poon, Anthea Pang, and Derek Pang said in the judgement that they allowed the appeal from Lai, and another defendant in the case, to proceed, as a lower court judge had “erred”. “The Court of Appeal gave them leave to appeal against their conviction, allowed their appeals, quashed the convictions and set aside the sentences,” the judges wrote…

Paramotors dropped bombs on a village in the central Sagaing region on Monday and a fighter jet conducted an air strike in Rakhine state, 320 km (199 miles) to the west of that incident a day later, killing at least two dozen people in total, Myanmar Now and the Irrawaddy reported. The Arakan Army, a rebel group at war with the ruling…
Spain’s newest drive to fast-track legal status for at least half a million undocumented migrants has already burdened immigration offices and sparked anxiety among prospective applicants weeks before the process even begins, a dozen union officials, lawyers, and migrants said. The Spanish government has said the drive will run from early April through…

Thousands of children remain in custody without access to legal counsel; a situation the experts warn is forcing minors to navigate complex immigration proceedings alone and undermining their fundamental rights. The three Special Rapporteurs, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, said they are in contact with the US Government on the issue. Duty to care They explained that under the 2008 Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), the US Office of Refugee Resettlement is responsible for the care and custody of unaccompanied children. The law requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to protect children from mistreatment, exploitation and trafficking in persons. It also guarantees that unaccompanied children in federal custody have access to legal counsel and should not be subjected…
Before I became a state commissioner in the Western State of Nigeria in 1973, my identification with the yearnings and aspirations of our Egbado people was minimal. Indeed, many Egbados had all along regarded me as an Egba man. This is because most of my friends were Egbas, and because my maternal grandfather’s compound is in the Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta, where I used to spend my vacations. Whether Colonel Oluwole Rotimi, an Egba man who was a friend and the governor of Western State at that time, considered my Egbado background before appointing me a state commissioner remains…
