The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, has joined forces with the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture to strengthen data protection and privacy standards across the country’s business sector.

The collaboration was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at NACCIMA’s headquarters in Abuja recently. The agreement aims to promote compliance with Nigeria’s data protection regulations and foster responsible data governance among businesses operating in the organised private sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, NDPC National Commissioner and CEO Vincent Olatunji described the partnership as a milestone in advancing Nigeria’s data protection framework.

He noted that the MoU would raise awareness among businesses about privacy best practices and support the development of a secure digital ecosystem for enterprises.

“Strengthening data protection standards is essential not only for safeguarding personal and corporate information but also for attracting global investment and boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness in the digital economy,” Olatunji said, linking the initiative to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises policies that enhance investor confidence.

NACCIMA President Engineer Jani Ibrahim praised the NDPC’s leadership in positioning Nigeria as a credible player in global data protection. He highlighted the central role of trust in economic growth as businesses worldwide increasingly adopt digital operations.

“The operationalisation of this MoU will strengthen investor confidence in Nigeria while promoting responsible business practices that safeguard individuals’ privacy,” Ibrahim said. He added that better data protection would ultimately improve the well-being of Nigerians by ensuring organisations handle personal information with greater responsibility and transparency.

The event also featured a formal recognition of Dr Olatunji’s contributions to Nigeria’s digital governance, as he was inducted as a member of NACCIMA.
