Bishop Laments Nigeria’s Economy, Expresses Hope for Future

The Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. Olusola Odedeji, has decried the state of Nigeria’s economy, while expressing optimism that the country will “get out of the woods” in the near future.

He made the remark while delivering his presidential address at the Third Session of the Ninth Synod of the diocese, held on Friday at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Ikeja, Lagos state.

According to a statement released on Saturday, Bishop Odedeji said the purchasing power of Nigerians had been severely weakened, adding that the value of the naira had significantly declined.

“The naira has lost value. Sometimes you are afraid to open your phone because of the numerous requests and bank account numbers that will be waiting for you. Things are that bad,” he said.

He, however, said the current economic challenges were a consequence of ongoing government reforms, adding that many developed nations had passed through similar phases.

“Many developed nations that our people are running to have gone through this phase. It’s a matter of time; we will get out of the woods. Those who have traveled out will begin to come back,” he said.

The Bishop also expressed concern over insecurity in the country, noting that even travelling between Lagos and Ibadan now generates fear due to uncertainty about possible threats.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts to ensure a safer environment for Nigerians.

Odedeji commended the Lagos State Government for what he described as its contributions to safety and development in the state, and acknowledged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s support for the Anglican Church.

“The government of Lagos State is doing well. May God bless Lagos State. The church is indebted to him. On the issue of land ownership and some of our parishes, the governor has played a significant role. He also played a key role in the ‘City of God’ project being handled by the diocese,” he said.

Earlier in his address, the Bishop reflected on the synod’s theme, Who Is on the Lord’s Side, drawing biblical references to emphasise moral choices in society.

“There is a real and ongoing conflict. There are only two sides: the side of God and the side of the devil. We are always in a battle between right and wrong. The battle is both external and internal,” he said, adding that alignment with God brings distinction and peace.

He cautioned leaders to ensure that decisions are guided not only by efficiency but also by moral and spiritual considerations.

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu underscored the role of the church in nation-building, saying no government can replace its influence.

He was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin.

“The Anglican Church came to Nigeria as a builder of society, wiping away tears in moments of pain. Through its parishes, schools, and hospitals, it has demonstrated the love of God and contributed immensely to society,” he said.

He added that the cathedral hosting the synod reflected the church’s longstanding investment in society and acknowledged its support for the government.

“Your prayers for this administration have kept us focused,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu urged the church to continue serving as a moral compass, promote peace, encourage civic participation, and support efforts to address social challenges, including mental health and ethical concerns.

The synod attracted hundreds of delegates from across the diocese, as well as Anglican bishops from various parts of Nigeria.
