Regular yoga practice may help lower the risk of hypertension, obesity, chronic stress and other lifestyle-related diseases by promoting healthier habits and improving physical and mental well-being, the Convener of Rhodes Yoga Festival, Erimoroti Aransiola, has said.

Aransiola stated this while speaking on the sidelines of the Rhodes Yoga Fest 4.0, on Saturday at JJT Park, Alausa, Lagos State, where she highlighted the role of yoga in preventing non-communicable diseases.

The Rhodes Yoga Fest 4.0 was held to commemorate International Day of Yoga.

This was disclosed in a statement by the convener on Sunday.

Commemorated on June 21 annually, International Day of Yoga is a day set aside to emphasise the universal benefits of yoga for holistic health, mindful living, and preventive healthcare.

Yoga is among the world’s oldest and most enduring practices for human health and wellbeing, according to the World Health Organisation.

“It is a holistic discipline that integrates physical activity, breath regulation, mindfulness, and meditation, supporting physical function, mental well-being, and social connectedness,” the WHO said.

Aransiola, who is also the Founder of Rhodes YogaNg, urged Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles and take responsibility for their health before illnesses develop.

“Yoga promotes habits that support long-term health and wellness. Regular practice can help reduce risk factors associated with lifestyle-related conditions such as hypertension, obesity, chronic stress, and poor mental health. It encourages people to take a proactive approach to their well-being rather than waiting until health challenges arise,” she said.

The wellness advocate explained that yoga complements other health interventions by promoting physical activity, mindfulness, and healthier living.

She said, “Yoga can play a significant role by encouraging regular physical activity, stress reduction, better sleep, mindfulness, and healthier habits. Many non-communicable diseases are linked to lifestyle factors, and yoga offers a simple, affordable, and accessible tool that supports both physical and mental health. It complements other health interventions and empowers people to take ownership of their well-being.”

According to her, regular participation in yoga offers several physical benefits, including improved flexibility, strength, balance and mobility, while also supporting better breathing, circulation and sleep.

She said, “Beyond the physical benefits, yoga encourages people to become more aware of their bodies and make healthier lifestyle choices.”

Aransiola dismissed the notion that yoga is meant only for certain groups of people, stressing that the practice is suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

“Yoga is for everyone regardless of age, gender, fitness level, or background. Children, young adults, athletes, working professionals, and seniors can all benefit from yoga. The practice is adaptable and can be modified to meet people where they are,” she said.

The wellness advocate said yoga plays an important role in improving mental health by helping people cope with stress and emotional challenges.

She said, “Yoga has a profound effect on mental well-being. Through movement, breathwork, and mindfulness practices, it helps reduce stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue. It creates space for self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relaxation, helping individuals develop greater resilience in dealing with everyday challenges.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind the festival, Aransiola said the event was conceived to make wellness practical, inclusive and community-driven.

She said, “Rhodes Yoga Fest was born from a desire to create a space where people can experience wellness in a practical, accessible, and community-driven way. The growing need for connection, healthier lifestyles, and mental well-being inspires this year’s edition.”
