The Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State branch, has announced the release of kidnapped orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, who was abducted on Sunday, May 26, 2026.

The announcement was contained in a statement jointly signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, dated June 2, 2026.

Recall that the state branch of the NMA had threatened to embark on an indefinite strike starting from Tuesday, June 2, over the surgeon’s abduction.

However, the statement disclosed that Dr Aguocha, a past state chairman of the NMA Abia State branch, regained his freedom on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after nine days in captivity.

The NMA also announced the suspension of the earlier planned total and indefinite strike action in the state.

The union thanked God for preserving his life and for his safe return to his family, colleagues, and patients.

The statement read: “The Association expresses profound gratitude to the Government of Abia State led by Governor Alex Otti, the Government of Imo State led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and all security agencies whose efforts contributed to securing his release.

“We also appreciate members of the public, the media, and fellow healthcare workers for their prayers, solidarity, and sustained pressure during this ordeal.

“While we are relieved by this development, Congress reiterates that the kidnap of healthcare workers is unacceptable and must not become normalised. The recurring targeting of doctors, as seen in the still unresolved case of Prof. Iweha since 2020, severely undermines healthcare delivery and the morale of professionals working under already difficult conditions.

“NMA Abia State therefore calls on the Federal and State Governments to urgently strengthen the security architecture around healthcare workers and facilities. We demand a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended and prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The Association remains committed to serving the people of Abia State and will continue to engage government and security agencies to guarantee a safe working environment for all doctors.

“We wish Dr Aguocha a speedy recovery from the physical and psychological trauma of this incident.”
