Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan produced an outstanding performance to win the women’s 100m hurdles at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco on Sunday. The 29-year-old crossed the finish line in 12.28 seconds, finishing ahead of Devynne Charlton, who recorded 12.40 seconds, and Nadine Visser, who came third in 12.47 seconds. The victory marked Amusan’s second career win in the event at the Rabat Diamond League and saw her set a new meeting record. Her time of 12.28 seconds erased the previous mark of 12.45 seconds, which she established at the same competition last year. It was also Amusan’s first…
Our Reporters The Federal Government has activated emergency surveillance measures at airports and other points of entry, including mandatory screening for inbound passengers and returning Hajj pilgrims, following a fresh outbreak of Ebola virus in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The measures include the deployment of a dedicated Ebola screening portal for all passengers travelling to Nigeria, heightened monitoring at international airports, and enhanced collaboration among health and aviation authorities to prevent the importation of the disease. The move comes after the World Health Organisation declared the latest Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, a…
On Friday, 29 May 2026, Nigeria’s Fourth Republic turned twenty-seven. But what happened a couple of months back still gnaws at my conscience. In the fluorescent-drenched jungle of electoral sloganeering and sesquipedalian grandstanding, where democracy is served piping hot in branded polythene bags, one man stood defiant. Clad in a faded T-shirt that had survived three changes of guard and fuelled by a spirit of pious fatigue, he raised his voice. It was not a call to the barricades, but a liturgical confession: “I want to die for Nigeria!” This was neither the dark ideation of the clinically depressed nor…
One afternoon in February 2026, I went to Ikeja GRA, a highbrow neighbourhood in Lagos, to talk to a new crop of executives at Cowrywise, the wealth management fintech that manages money for over two million Nigerians. Four weeks earlier, at a January retreat held at a business club in Victoria Island, a highbrow area on the southern side of Lagos, Cowrywise had promoted 11 people to the title of associate vice president (AVP), the type of move that earns the rare tag of ‘unprecedented’ in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. For a company of fewer than 80 people, it meant one…

Foreign direct investment into Nigeria plunged by 80 per cent in January 2026 as foreign investors increasingly channelled funds into bonds and money market instruments, despite a sharp rise in overall capital inflows, the latest Economic Report of the Central Bank of Nigeria has shown. The report revealed that FDI fell to $30m in January from $150m in December 2025, while foreign portfolio investment surged to $3.37bn from $940m over the same period, showing investors’ preference for debt assets over long-term productive investments. President Bola Tinubu (PHOTO CREDIT: X @aonanuga1956) Seeing how empires die, strongmen collapse and kingdoms go up in ruins, Yoruba seek to showcase the brevity of life. In this, they attempt to demonstrate that all life’s attainments are perishable. In metaphors of the masquerade festival and the morning dew that perches on leaves by sidewalks leading to the farm (enini), they bring out the certainty of finality very succinctly. In two short allegories, they perfectly capture the fleeting, short-lived nature of political influence and authority. So, they say, the yearly masquerade festival will soon come to an end and the son of the…
Nigerian singer David “Davido” Adeleke has distanced himself from the City Boy Movement (CBM), established in 2022 as a youth-driven support group for President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election campaign. Davido’s’ best friend, Cubana Chief Priest (CP), is a prominent member of the movement, which mobilised youths in support of Mr Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. CP served as CBM’s Imo State Director and on several occasions, including in interviews, pledged to do everything possible to secure Mr Tinubu’s re-election. The “Unavailable” crooner clarified on his X page after responding to an X user, Princess Luna (@princessluna237), who challenged him following his…
