The U.S. military campaign against Iran has put Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the back foot ahead of an expected summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, who for the second time in as many months has turned America’s military against one of Beijing’s close partners. Trump is set to arrive in Beijing at the end of March following the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a risky Caracas raid in January and the U.S.-Israeli air war that on Saturday killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former leaders of two countries that have been major oil suppliers for China. It is far from clear…
Progress on rules for lethal autonomous weapons urgently needed, says chair of Geneva talks
Progress on a potential international framework to prohibit and restrict Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS) is urgently needed, as talks on the matter in Geneva enter a crucial phase, their chair said. From this week to the mandate’s end in September, 128 states will discuss whether to agree by consensus a non-binding text that could pave the way for future negotiations on prohibitions and regulations on LAWS. Since 2014, more than a hundred states party to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons have met in the Swiss city to discuss banning LAWS that do not comply with existing international law…

US Embassy in Saudi Arabia hit by Iranian drones as Israeli military ramps up operations in Lebanon
Iran struck the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia’s capital with a drone early Tuesday as it kept hitting targets around the region, while the United States and Israel pounded Iran with airstrikes in what U.S. President Donald Trump suggested was just the start of a relentless campaign that could last more than a month. The attack from two drones on the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh caused a “limited fire” and minor damage, according to Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry, and the embassy urged Americans to avoid the compound. It followed an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, which announced Tuesday it…
Lebanon’s leaders turn on Hezbollah as airstrikes hit Beirut and thousands seek shelter
The Israeli military on Tuesday struck a building housing Hezbollah-aligned Al-Manar channel studios in Beirut’s southern suburbs following an evacuation warning, the channel said. In a statement, the Israeli military said it targeted “Hezbollah command centers and weapons storage facilities in Beirut.” Following the strike, plumes of smoke were seen billowing over the skyline. No immediate details on casualties were available. Al-Manar’s headquarters and transmission facilities in Beirut were last struck by Israel during the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. The renewed airstrikes that began Sunday prompted Lebanese civilians to flee the country’s south and Beirut’s southern suburbs Monday,…

What is the correct spelling of the term that describes the special photography session people have for major events like weddings, fashion shows and TV commercials? Photo shoot or photoshoot? In other words, is it written as two words or one? The couple are having a photo shoot tomorrow. Or The couple are having a photoshoot tomorrow? The question takes us back to compounds, which are words or phrases generated by combining two or more distinct/existing ones, with the new elements having unique, singular meanings. Examples are waterfront (from water + front), website, blackboard and windscreen. However, compounds’ structure is…
