Why I Believe Messi Should Have Been Sent Off Against Algeria

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered for Lionel Messi’s historic hat-trick, but I believe the Argentine captain was fortunate to remain on the pitch after a dangerous challenge on Algeria defender Aïssa Mandi. Messi scored three goals to help Argentina begin their title defence in style and move level with Miroslav Klose as the World Cup’s joint all-time leading scorer. However, the biggest talking point of the match came in the 32nd minute. Replays appeared to show Messi planting his studs onto Mandi’s calf and Achilles area. The Algerian defender was left…

Nigerians Must Speak Out on Insecurity

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on prominent Hausa singer, Dauda Rarara, to openly speak out against the country’s worsening insecurity, insisting that silence and political bias only deepen national challenges. The controversy stems from Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles on June 10, where he wore a customised jacket bearing the inscription “Bring Them Home” alongside the names of over 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted on May 15 in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. In a video posted on his verified Facebook page, Rarara described Davido’s…

UN officials call for urgent action in Yemen to push peace, reduce hunger

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

Addressing the 15-member Council about the current situation on the ground, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg said that while the 2022 truce between the Houthi rebels and the government continues to hold, the conflict is unresolved, with Yemenis bearing the cost of this uncertainty.“In meetings with Yemenis, we are told that entrenched front lines across the country are draining resources, deepening fragmentation and accelerating the militarisation of society, even driving students and teachers to join armed groups simply as a means of economic survival,” Mr. Grundberg said.“As long as Yemen’s conflict remains unsettled, the risk of further destabilisation…

Nigeria’s Unplanned Curriculum: From Complaints to Action

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

Nigeria runs an accidental university. Its flagship course is Complaints 101. No JAMB cut-off, 200,000 students per session, and a 100 per cent pass rate. Lecture halls are our WhatsApp groups, Twitter spaces, and beer parlours. We can diagnose fuel prices, bad roads, and failed leadership with surgical precision. We inherited this skill from colonial and military eras, when complaining was the only weapon of the powerless. But 60 years after independence, the world has moved from diagnosis to design. We are experts at describing darkness and apprentices at lighting candles. As the Hausas say, “A mouth that complains cannot…

Trump tells G7 counterparts: “I’m the boss”

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

The G7 summit of world powers in France is being chaired by President Emmanuel Macron as host but on Wednesday his guest US President Donald Trump left no doubt over who he believed was in charge. “I’m the boss,” Trump said as he strode in to the morning session of the last day of the three-day G7 summit, with the other leaders already in their seats. Amid laughter, Macron appeared to take the comment with good humour. “How are you?” the French president asked. “Good, thank you,” replied Trump, a tycoon before becoming president who famously hosted the TV show…

Atiku Welcomes Appeal Court Stay on ADC Deregistration

    By Prima NewsJune 17, 2026

African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to stay the execution of a Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the ADC and four other political parties. The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had on Monday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister ADC, Accord Party, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party and Zenith Labour Party. The court ruled that the parties failed to meet the constitutional performance thresholds under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution, specifically requirements related to securing at least 25 per cent…
