Badminton to change scoring system to 3×15 from 2027

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has approved a major overhaul of the sport’s scoring system, confirming that matches will adopt a new 3×15 format from January 4, 2027.

As reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, under the new rules, matches will still be played in a best-of-three games format, but each game will be decided by the first player or pair to reach 15 points, replacing the current 21-point system.

The governing body described the decision as an “important milestone for the future of badminton,” following approval at its annual general meeting in Denmark after extensive testing, analysis, and consultation.

According to the BWF, the change is aimed at making matches more dynamic and engaging, while also improving scheduling consistency across tournaments. The federation also believes the shorter format will reduce player fatigue and lower injury risks over the course of a season.

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said the reform is intended to modernise the sport without altering its core identity.

“We are building a sport that speaks to the next generation, while continuing to invest in the long-term future of our players,” she said.

She added that the 3×15 system is designed to deliver “more exciting and competitive badminton, improved scheduling, more consistent match durations, and potential benefits for player welfare and recovery.”

While some stakeholders reportedly raised concerns during the consultation phase, the BWF maintained that the sport’s essential qualities will remain unchanged.

“We know that change can raise concern, especially in a sport with such strong traditions,” she said. “But this decision does not change the fundamental nature of badminton. The skill, tactics, physical and mental demands, and drama of the sport will remain.”

The federation said five different scoring systems were evaluated before the final decision was made, with the 3×15 format ultimately selected as the preferred option.

The rule change marks one of the most significant adjustments in modern badminton and is expected to reshape match rhythm, strategy, and viewing experience once it comes into effect in 2027.
