Brent Crude Oil Climbs Toward $90 As Middle East Tensions Keep Oil Market On Edge

Oil prices extended their rally on Wednesday with Brent crude oil rising to around $89.66 per barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbing to approximately $83.92 as renewed uncertainty over a potential U.S.-Iran agreement and fresh security incidents involving commercial shipping heightened concerns about global crude supplies.

The latest gains mark another strong session for the oil market with both benchmark contracts trading at their highest levels since late July as geopolitical developments continue to outweigh bearish signals from rising U.S. crude inventories.

Investor sentiment has become increasingly driven by developments in the Middle East after optimism surrounding a possible diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran faded.

Market participants are closely monitoring the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, where shipping activity remains well below normal levels amid persistent security concerns.

Additional support came from reports of attacks on vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, reinforcing fears that supply disruptions could intensify if tensions escalate further.

Analysts say uncertainty surrounding regional security is likely to keep oil prices volatile in the near term.

Despite the bullish geopolitical backdrop, industry data presented a mixed picture. The American Petroleum Institute reported a sharp increase of about 9.1 million barrels in U.S. crude inventories, suggesting domestic supply remains ample.

However, gasoline and distillate stockpiles declined, indicating continued strength in refined fuel demand. Investors are awaiting official inventory figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration for further confirmation.

Looking beyond the immediate market reaction, the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects disruptions to Middle East crude supplies to persist through 2027, suggesting expectations that geopolitical risk will remain a key driver of global oil prices over the medium term.

For investors, the current market reflects a tug-of-war between strong physical supply in the United States and elevated geopolitical risks in one of the world’s most critical oil-producing regions.

Until greater clarity emerges on U.S.-Iran negotiations and shipping conditions in the Gulf, crude prices are likely to remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments.
