Catholic Seminarian Kelvin Ochai has regained freedom after abduction in Benue state.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo in Benue State has confirmed the safe release of its seminarian, Kelvin Ochai, days after he was abducted by gunmen in Asa III, Otukpo Local Government Area of the state.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo.

According to the diocese, Ochai escaped from the custody of his abductors on Friday, July 31, 2026, and successfully made his way to Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, where he was reunited with his family.

The Catholic authorities said the seminarian returned unharmed, attributing his freedom to divine intervention and the prayers of Christians, priests, and well-wishers who stood with the family throughout the period of his captivity.

“Through the prayers of the people of God, Kelvin escaped from the custody of his abductors on the evening of Friday, 31st July, 2026, and made his way to Aliade, Gwer East LGA of Benue State. He has since been safely reunited with his family and is unharmed,” the statement read.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, expressed appreciation to priests, religious leaders, lay faithful, and members of the public for their support, prayers, and solidarity during the period of the abduction.

The diocese thanked everyone who contributed to efforts that led to the seminarian’s safe return and called for continued prayers for peace and security across Benue State.
