Coco Gauff Battles back from Two Match Points to reach US Open Semifinals
NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 09: Coco Gauff of the United States celebrates after defeating Mirra Andreeva in their Women’s Singles Quarterfinal match on Day Eleven of the 2026 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 09, 2026 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. Coco Gauff has battled back from the brink to defeat Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 and reach the US Open semifinals for the first time since winning the title in 2023.

Gauff looked in serious trouble after dropping the opening set and then facing two match points in the second-set tiebreak. But the 22-year-old American saved both, forced a deciding set and took control from there.

The victory is Gauff’s 11th consecutive win and her seventh Grand Slam semifinal. She also remains unbeaten against Andreeva, improving her head-to-head record to 6-0.

After completing the comeback, Gauff celebrated passionately before explaining what helped her turn the match around.

“I was thinking about Frances Tiafoe and how he came back yesterday.”

Now Gauff faces Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. Rybakina became the new world No. 1 earlier in the day after defeating Qinwen Zheng, setting up a huge clash between the American champion and the newly crowned No. 1.

Gauff has now reached 46 wins in 2026, while Rybakina leads their head-to-head 1-0 after beating her in Toronto last month.
