Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to his longtime rival Lionel Messi following the Argentine superstar’s farewell from international football.
Messi brought his 21-year career with Argentina to an emotional end after helping the world champions defeat Benin 3-0 in Buenos Aires. The 39-year-old scored one goal and provided two assists in his final appearance for the national team.
Following Messi’s farewell message on social media, Ronaldo responded with a heartfelt tribute, recognising the legacy his former rival has built with Argentina.
“Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will live on forever. You have all my respect for everything you’ve achieved with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.
The message adds another memorable moment to the historic rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi, who spent more than a decade competing against each other at the highest level while representing Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
Despite their fierce rivalry on the pitch, Ronaldo’s latest message highlighted the mutual respect between two of football’s greatest players.
