One of football’s greatest careers at international level has come to an end. Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional close to a remarkable 23-year journey with Portugal.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, confirming that he will step away from the national team after the November international fixtures. Ronaldo admitted that it was not an easy decision but believes the time has come to hand over Portugal’s famous number 7 shirt to the next generation.

Since making his senior debut in 2003, Ronaldo has given Portuguese football some of its greatest moments. He leaves the national team as its all-time leading scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances, both extraordinary numbers that reflect his incredible consistency and longevity.

His biggest achievement came at Euro 2016, when he captained Portugal to their first major international trophy. Although an injury forced him off during the final against France, Ronaldo remained on the sidelines, encouraging his teammates as Portugal secured a historic 1-0 victory.

He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, adding two more major honours to an already impressive international career.

Beyond the trophies, Ronaldo changed the way Portugal was viewed in international football. His goals, leadership and determination made him the face of the national team for more than two decades. He also became the first player to score at five different World Cups and went on to represent his country at six editions of the tournament.

While his international career is now over, this does not mean Ronaldo is retiring from football altogether. He is still expected to continue playing at club level.

For Portugal, replacing a player of Ronaldo’s influence will be no easy task. His departure marks the end of an era, and the memories he leaves behind will remain part of the country’s football history for generations.

After 23 years, 234 appearances and 146 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey with Portugal has reached its final chapter.
