Former Super Eagles striker Daniel Amokachi has been unveiled as the Pan-African brand ambassador for sports betting company 22Bet.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the BON Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, where the company said the partnership would promote African football culture, support grassroots communities, and encourage responsible engagement with sports across the continent.

Speaking after signing the partnership agreement, Amokachi described the appointment as a privilege, saying he was grateful to have been chosen despite the many football legends across Africa.

“I am honoured to stand before you today. There are over a million legends out there who could easily be standing where I am today, so I give God the glory for this opportunity. Anybody could have been standing here today, and I’m truly honoured,” he said.

The former Everton striker revealed that discussions with 22Bet began during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), adding that he embraced the offer because of its Pan-African vision.

“I have worked with agencies before. I was with a Turkish agency until 22Bet contacted me during AFCON. Whenever it has something to do with Nigeria or Africa, I always try to embrace it.

“A lot of offers came, but I turned them down because I was comfortable. What attracted me to this partnership is its Pan-African nature. It allows me to do more in giving back to the African continent.”

    Rationale

Amokachi said another major factor behind his decision was the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“One of the core reasons I accepted this contract is because of the CSR projects 22Bet is involved in. We have seen many companies enter Nigeria, make money, and leave without giving back. The more you make, the more you should invest in the communities and the people of the country,” he said.

Speaking at the unveiling, 22Bet Country Manager Fikayo Ogunfuye said the partnership was built on a shared vision to promote African football beyond commercial interests.

He described Amokachi as a football icon whose influence continues to inspire generations across the continent.

“A man who carried the hopes of a nation, competed at the highest level and continued to inspire generations long after hanging up his boots. This partnership is not about short-term visibility; it is about purpose,” Mr Ogunfuye said.

According to him, the collaboration will see Amokachi work with 22Bet to support football culture, local communities and responsible engagement across Africa.

“Football remains one of the strongest forces uniting our continent, from the streets of Lagos to communities across West, East and Southern Africa. The game shapes identity, builds character and creates opportunities.

“Through this partnership, we want to celebrate that culture, amplify authentic African football stories and contribute meaningfully to the communities that keep the game alive,” he added.

Mr Ogunfuye added that 22Bet was committed to ensuring its support for football goes hand in hand with promoting positive values and responsible participation.

He disclosed that in the coming months, the partnership would focus on celebrating African football heroes, supporting young players and grassroots football communities, while using Amokachi’s platform to encourage responsible participation in sports.

Widely known as “The Bull,” Amokachi enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Club Brugge, Everton and Beşiktaş. He was a member of Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad and the Dream Team that won Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Since retiring, he has remained active in football as a coach, administrator and television pundit
