Nigerian media personality and actor, Denrele Edun, has explained why he symbolically “married” himself while celebrating his 45th birthday.

The entertainer, born Adenrele Oluwafemi Edun, shared a video on social media announcing the unconventional union on June 13, which quickly sparked widespread reactions online.

In an Instagram story he shared on Tuesday, Denrele explained that the self-marriage was a celebration of his journey through years of highs and lows.

Reflecting on his life at 45, he said he chose to honour the one person who had remained with him through every stage of his journey.

“Till death didn’t do us part. So I married myself. After 45 years of chaos, glitter, survival, reinvention, controversy, resilience, heartbreak and triumph, I remain the greatest love story I’ve ever known,” he said.

He added that the symbolic union represented an embrace of every version of himself that had contributed to his growth.

“I am the bride and the groom. And I am marrying every version of myself that fought to get here. Today, I marry the only person who never left my side: ME!” he declared.

Known for his flamboyant style and unconventional personality, Denrele concluded his message by describing himself as “The Bride. The Groom. The Happily Ever After.”

His announcement drew widespread reactions online, with many fans and followers applauding the message of self-acceptance, resilience and personal growth as he marked the milestone birthday.
