Enugu State was filled with solemnity on Tuesday evening as dignitaries from across the state and beyond gathered for a Night of Tributes in honour of the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District until his passing on November 18, 2025.

Senator Ezea was widely remembered as a man of integrity, courage, and unwavering dedication to humanity. Attendees described him as a leader who never gave up on causes he was passionate about and whose vision will continue through his political ideology.

Among the dignitaries present were the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ossai; Senator Victor Umeh; Prof. Osita Ogbu; the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu; and the Caretaker Committee Chairman of APC in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye.

Others in attendance included the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Simon Ortuanya; the Chairman of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRH Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu; Prof. Austin Akubue; Senator Chuka Utazi; former Minister Fidelia Njeze; and Chief Matthias Omeh, among many others.

Chief Nnia Nwodo, Chairman of the Night of Tributes and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, described Senator Ezea as a man whose children should understand the legacy of their father. He said Ezea’s life reflected greatness, intellectual rigor, and humility.

“Okey Ezea was humble. He connected with every part of Nsukka, especially the down-trodden, and didn’t impose himself on the people. He knew politics was deeply flawed but engaged to make a difference. May his soul rest in peace,” Nwodo eulogized.

Senator Victor Umeh, Chairman of the National Burial Committee, hailed Ezea as a “fallen hero of Nigeria.” He said:

“He made a lasting impact in the lives of his people. He was forthright, steadfast, and deeply committed to fighting for the Igbo people. He championed the creation of Adada State and worked tirelessly to rally support for it. Sadly, he fell ill and passed away before seeing this vision realized.”

Senator Okey Ezea will be buried on Friday, February 13, in his hometown of Itchi, Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State.
