Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Ethan Nwaneri from Arsenal on a loan deal that will run until the end of the year, in what is being described as a significant coup for the German club.

The attacking midfielder had been expected to leave Arsenal on a permanent transfer, but the final arrangement will instead see him move to Dortmund on a short-term basis. That structure keeps open the possibility of a return to north London, with Mikel Arteta still understood to believe Nwaneri could have an important role to play in Arsenal’s future side.

Dortmund’s move gives the player the chance to continue his development in a new environment while remaining tied to Arsenal beyond the immediate loan spell. For the Bundesliga side, the deal adds a highly regarded attacking option to their squad without committing to a permanent transfer at this stage.

The switch also reflects Arsenal’s reluctance to completely close the door on Nwaneri. Although a permanent exit had appeared likely, Arteta’s stance has helped shape an agreement that offers the midfielder competitive opportunities away from the club while preserving a pathway back to the Gunners.

The arrangement will now be watched closely by both clubs over the coming months. Dortmund will hope Nwaneri can make an impact during his stay, while Arsenal will assess whether the loan provides the platform needed for him to return ready to contribute.

With the deal in place until the end of the year, Nwaneri’s future is not fully settled. However, his move to Dortmund represents a major step in the next phase of his career and leaves Arsenal with flexibility over what comes next.
