FairMoney Embeds Consumer Protection, Regulatory Compliance into Digital Banking

FairMoney Microfinance Bank says it is embedding regulatory compliance, data privacy and consumer protection into the design and lifecycle of its financial products as Nigerian regulators intensify oversight of digital lending and financial technology operators.

Speaking during an interview attended by a NewsOnline Editor on Thursday, James Edeh, Head of Compliance at FairMoney Microfinance Bank, said the institution’s approach goes beyond responding to regulatory requirements after products have been developed.

According to him, compliance, legal, risk-management, data-protection and consumer-protection considerations are incorporated from the product-development stage through customer onboarding, service delivery, complaints resolution and periodic review.

The approach aligns FairMoney’s operations with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Consumer Protection Regulations, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s digital lending framework and the privacy principles established under the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation and Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

The CBN Consumer Protection Regulations emphasise transparency, fair treatment, responsible business conduct, data protection and effective complaint resolution by regulated financial institutions.

Similarly, the FCCPC’s Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations 2025 establish standards for fairness, transparency, responsible lending and accountability across Nigeria’s digital credit market.

The FCCPC resumed implementation of the regulations in July 2026 following a Federal High Court judgment affirming their validity. The Commission said the framework was designed to curb exploitative practices and ensure that financial innovation develops within a fair and accountable environment.

Edeh said FairMoney’s objective is to balance business growth and innovation with regulatory obligations without compromising customers’ rights and interests.

He explained that compliance officers serve as a bridge between regulatory expectations and product development, translating applicable requirements into practical processes that product and technology teams can implement.

“Compliance is not just about what is at the back. There is also a lot of work that is going on to ensure that the customers are protected,” Edeh said.

According to him, the compliance team becomes involved from the initial stage whenever FairMoney develops a new product or modifies an existing service.

“For instance, if the business wants to onboard customers digitally, the compliance officer has to redesign and give them the requirements on how the customers will be able to onboard in the right way that is in tandem with what is obtainable in the regulatory environment,” he explained.

“That includes requirements around customer identification, BVN verification, NIN checks and other know-your-customer processes.”

These controls are intended to ensure that digital onboarding remains convenient while meeting the identification, verification and risk-management standards expected of a CBN-regulated financial institution.

For FairMoney, regulatory compliance should not be treated merely as a cost or administrative obligation.

Edeh described compliance as the process of finding a sustainable balance between commercial objectives, regulatory requirements and customer interests.

The bank monitors regulatory developments and engages industry stakeholders to anticipate changes within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving financial-services sector. Compliance officers also brief the board periodically on regulatory developments and emerging trends that could affect the institution’s products and operations.

This enables FairMoney to prepare for regulatory changes instead of waiting for enforcement actions before reviewing its processes.

The bank’s approach places consumer protection at the centre of customer onboarding, loan disclosures, data privacy, agent conduct, complaints resolution, product development and technology infrastructure.

As competition within Nigeria’s digital-finance sector increases, the ability to disburse loans quickly may no longer be the only measure of a lender’s strength. Institutions will increasingly be assessed by how effectively they protect customers, communicate transparently, secure personal information and comply with regulatory standards.

For FairMoney, embedding compliance into its operations is therefore not simply about satisfying the CBN, FCCPC or Nigeria Data Protection Commission. It is also about building the trust required to sustain financial inclusion and long-term growth.
