Officials enforcing sanitation laws in Lagos State have apprehended five individuals during an early morning operation to curb open defecation and other environmental nuisances.

This was revealed in a video shared on X by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Thursday.

According to the commissioner, the operation was carried out around Ebute Ero and the surrounding areas on Lagos Island.

“Anti-open defecation squad on early morning duty at Ebute Ero and environs in Lagos Island, to curb open defecation and other environmental nuisances.

“Five (5) defaulters were apprehended during the operation.

“They have been taken to the enforcement office at Sura-Simpson for further investigation and prosecution where they would be taken to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps headquarters at Oshodi for prosecution in accordance with the extant laws.”

Wahab said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb open defecation and improve environmental sanitation across the state.

PUNCH Online reports that the Lagos State Government has warned residents and visitors to desist from open defecation.

The government also arrested at least 275 residents across different parts of the state for defecating in public places despite the availability of 8,710 functional public toilets.
