Nigeria’s Flamingos are just one victory away from returning to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, but overcoming Venezuela in Sunday’s (today’s) quarterfinal will require another strong collective performance from Akeem Busari’s side.

The Nigerians have grown in confidence since their opening-day defeat to Poland, recording impressive victories over Puerto Rico, defending champions DPR Korea and Mexico to book their place in the last eight.

Venezuela, however, will not be an easy opponent. Their stunning 1-0 victory over Germany in the round of 16 demonstrated their ability to frustrate quality opposition, with Diana Bravo’s early goal proving decisive.

With a semi-final ticket on the line, individual quality could make the difference. From Nigeria’s attacking threats to Venezuela’s match-winners, here are five players who could influence the outcome of the quarterfinal.

    Oluebube Umejiaku – Nigeria

Umejiaku has been one of Nigeria’s most influential attacking players in Morocco, combining her goalscoring instincts with an ability to create opportunities for her teammates.

The forward has found the net against Poland, DPR Korea and Mexico, making her one of the key players in the Flamingos’ impressive run to the quarterfinals.

Her contribution has not been limited to scoring. Umejiaku also provided the assist for Precious Oscar’s stoppage-time goal in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico, underlining her importance to the team’s attacking play.

Her movement, directness, and ability to find space around the opposition penalty area could prove valuable against a Venezuelan defence encouraged by its performance against Germany.

If Nigeria are to break down their opponents, Umejiaku’s ability to turn promising situations into clear chances could be decisive.

    Diana Bravo – Venezuela

Bravo arrives in the quarterfinal with the confidence of a player who has already delivered when her team needed her most.

The Venezuelan forward scored the decisive goal in their 1-0 round-of-16 victory over Germany, finding the net in the fifth minute before her teammates produced a disciplined defensive performance to protect the advantage.

It was a significant contribution against a German side that had won all three of its group matches and finished top of Group E with nine points.

Bravo’s ability to take an early opportunity makes her a player Nigeria cannot afford to lose sight of, particularly during the opening stages.

The Flamingos will need to remain organised at the back and limit the space available to her, as another early breakthrough could put Venezuela in a position to defend with the same confidence they showed against Germany.

    Oluwakemi Adegbuyi – Nigeria

Adegbuyi has provided Nigeria with another important attacking outlet, making her contributions during the group stage particularly valuable to Busari’s team.

The forward scored in the 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before opening the scoring against defending champions DPR Korea in Nigeria’s memorable 3-1 triumph.

Her goals have demonstrated her ability to make an impact in important moments, while her movement gives the Flamingos another option when opponents attempt to crowd out their attacking players.

Against Venezuela, Adegbuyi could be particularly important if the South Americans decide to sit deep and protect their defensive shape.

Nigeria will need players who can find pockets of space and make decisive runs into dangerous areas. Adegbuyi has already shown that she can provide that attacking threat, and another influential performance could take the Flamingos closer to the semi-finals.

    Andrea Suárez – Venezuela

Suárez has already shown she can deliver under pressure, scoring Venezuela’s dramatic stoppage-time winner in their 3-2 group-stage victory over Zambia.

With the contest finely balanced, her late strike secured Venezuela’s only group-stage win and kept their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.

That goal highlighted her ability to remain alert and make the most of opportunities, even when a match appears to be heading towards a draw.

Nigeria must therefore maintain concentration throughout the contest, particularly in the closing stages when fatigue and lapses in organisation can create openings.

Suárez may not have scored against Germany, but her contribution against Zambia shows why the Flamingos cannot afford to switch off at any point.

    Jane Ijirigho – Nigeria

While Nigeria’s attacking players have attracted attention with their goals, goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho has also played an important role in keeping the Flamingos’ campaign alive.

The 1.92-metre shot-stopper, identified by FIFA as the tournament’s tallest player, delivered an impressive performance in Nigeria’s 2-1 round-of-16 victory over Mexico.

Ijirigho made an important save to deny Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes before producing another excellent intervention to tip Kemberly Garcia’s long-range effort onto the crossbar.

Her presence and reach have given Nigeria an added layer of security, particularly when opponents manage to find space around the penalty area.

Against Venezuela, Ijirigho could once again be called upon to produce important saves, especially if the South Americans attempt to exploit counter-attacking opportunities or test Nigeria from distance.

The Flamingos will hope their goalkeeper can maintain her impressive form, while the defenders in front of her must ensure that Venezuela are not given too many opportunities to threaten.

Nigeria’s collective strength could make the difference

Although these five players could have significant individual influence, Nigeria’s chances of reaching the semi-finals will ultimately depend on how effectively the entire team performs.

The Flamingos have already shown that they can score through different players, while their victories over DPR Korea and Mexico have demonstrated their ability to handle high-pressure knockout football.

Venezuela, meanwhile, have proved they can make life difficult for stronger opponents, particularly when they find an early goal and settle into a defensive rhythm.

Nigeria must therefore combine their attacking quality with patience, concentration and defensive discipline. If Umejiaku and Adegbuyi can find the spaces to hurt Venezuela, while Ijirigho remains dependable between the posts, Busari’s side will have a strong opportunity to progress.

With a semi-final place within reach, the Flamingos know that another complete team performance could take them one step closer to making history in Morocco.
