The 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Sunday with Spain crowned world champions after a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute as Spain lifted the World Cup for the second time in their history, having previously won the trophy in 2010.
Luis de la Fuente’s side enjoyed an outstanding tournament, conceding only one goal in eight matches on their way to becoming champions. Argentina finished as runners-up, while England defeated France 6-4 to secure third place.
Following the final, FIFA announced the winners of the tournament’s individual awards, recognising the standout performers of the competition.
Spain midfielder Rodri was named the winner of the Golden Ball after leading his country’s midfield throughout the tournament and helping La Roja claim the biggest prize in world football.
France captain Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals in eight matches. It was the second consecutive World Cup in which he claimed the award.
Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon received the Golden Glove after an impressive campaign in which he helped his side keep seven clean sheets and concede only one goal.
Spain defender Pau Cubarsi was named the Best Young Player after producing a series of composed performances at the heart of the defence throughout the tournament.
The Netherlands were presented with the FIFA Fair Play Award for their discipline and sportsmanship during the competition.
