At least nine people were killed and 4,524 displaced by rainstorms across eight local government areas of Kano State between January and August 2026, the State Emergency Management Agency has said.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Isyaku Kubarachi, told The PUNCH in an interview on Thursday that 49 others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the period.

“A total of nine persons lost their lives, 49 were injured and 4,524 others were displaced as a result of windstorm/rainstorm between January and August 2026,” he said.

Kubarachi said the incidents were recorded in Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono and Kibiya local government areas.

He said windstorms and rainstorms accounted for the highest number of people affected among the six major disasters recorded in the state during the period.

“During the period under review, windstorms and rainstorms accounted for the majority of the affected persons in all six major disasters that happened in the state,” he said.

Giving a breakdown of the affected persons, Kubarachi said Gaya recorded 342 victims, Rimin Gado 233, Ajingi 415, Minjibir 712, Kabo 102, Bichi 775, Shanono 530 and Kibiya 630.

He said the agency had completed assessments of the affected areas and submitted reports to the Kano State Government for intervention.

“The agency had compiled comprehensive reports and submitted them to the state government for assistance to victims. As soon as we receive relief materials, they will be distributed to them,” he said.

The development comes weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly urged the state government to provide relief materials to victims of rainstorms and other disasters in affected communities.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu, during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, on July 29, 2026.
