MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and promoting African storytelling through sustained investment in platforms that recognise, reward, and nurture creative talent.

As part of its participation in the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, the telecommunications company sponsored the Best Short Film category and presented a N5m cash prize to the creators of ‘Hussaini’, the winning entry by filmmakers Orire Nwani and Josh Olaoluwa.

The presentation marked a celebration of emerging storytellers whose work continues to shape the future of African cinema, with Hussaini earning one of the most competitive honours in the short film category.

Speaking during the presentation, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to youth empowerment and creative industry development.

According to her, MTN remains intentional about supporting young Nigerians who are pushing creative boundaries through film and storytelling.

“At MTN, one of the things that we are so committed to is youth empowerment. We believe that the youth of Nigeria are actually the future of the country. When we see young people being productive and coming out tops in what they do, it speaks to their commitment and ability to move beyond boundaries. One of the ways we support the creative industry is through the short film category, and we are delighted to see deserving winners who are obviously on their way to great things,” she said.

The filmmakers behind Hussaini expressed gratitude for the recognition, with one of the creators describing the win as a defining moment after multiple nominations in the category.

Beyond the AMVCA stage, MTN’s support for emerging creatives also extended to Young Filmmakers’ Day and the #MTNFilmChallenge, both designed to spotlight and reward new voices in African cinema.

Through the initiative, five emerging filmmakers — Precious Aisa, Fitz-Williams Ochie, Ugwueze Jennifer, Anuyimika Ayomide, and Alexander Oshiame — received over N4m in cash prizes for their short-form films showcasing Nigerian culture, creativity, and everyday experiences. Two additional finalists also received consolation prizes.
