The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano Strategic Command, has raided the Bayero University Kano old site area and arrested six suspects allegedly involved in illicit drug activities.

The operation also led to the dismantling of several drug joints within and around the area.

The raid followed growing concerns over the use of areas surrounding tertiary institutions for drug trafficking and substance abuse, a trend security agencies say poses threats to students, staff and nearby communities.

Confirming the operation in a statement on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Sadiq Maigatari, said the exercise was carried out under the leadership of the Commander, CN DY Lawal.

“The NDLEA Kano Strategic Command under the leadership of CN DY Lawal has conducted a successful raid of the Bayero University Kano old site area, arresting six trespassers involved in illicit drug activities and dismantling several drug joints,” the statement read.

Maigatari explained that the raid was launched following a formal complaint from the university management over the activities of suspected drug dealers and users operating within parts of the institution and adjoining communities.

“Acting on a formal complaint from the management of Bayero University, the command moved swiftly under ‘Operation Sharar Mafaka’ to dislodge individuals who had been using parts of the university precincts and adjacent areas for the trading and consumption of illicit substances,” he stated.

According to him, six suspects were apprehended during the operation, while items linked to the illegal activities were seized and destroyed.

“This action demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a drug-free environment where students, staff and their families can live and work in safety. We will never relent. We will continue to dislodge and occupy all drug joints under Operation Sharar Mafaka,” the statement added.

The command noted that the operation highlighted the importance of collaboration between the NDLEA and educational institutions in combating drug abuse and related crimes.

It also commended the management of Bayero University for promptly reporting the situation and cooperating with security agencies.

The agency warned individuals against using government institutions or educational facilities as centres for drug trading or consumption, stressing that such activities would not be tolerated.

It further urged members of the public and institutions to continue reporting suspicious activities to enable security agencies identify and dismantle drug hideouts across the state.
