A non-governmental organisation, Cure Blindness Project, says it performed more than 315,000 sight-restoring surgeries across its global network in 2025, marking its most impactful year since it was founded more than three decades ago.

The organisation disclosed this in its 2025 Impact Report, stating that the surgeries represented more than one per cent of the world’s cataract blindness, highlighting what it described as a record-breaking year in the global effort to eliminate avoidable blindness.

According to a statement, the organisation said it expanded access to eye care through community screenings, treatments, advanced surgical procedures and follow-up services, helping to restore independence, strengthen families and improve communities where it operates.

Commenting on the achievement, the Chief Executive Officer of Cure Blindness Project, K-T Overbey, said the milestone reflected the combined efforts of the organisation and its partners.

“It is always a true honour to announce our results. On behalf of our team and all our partners, we are excited and proud to share what we’ve accomplished together.

“Our 2025 Impact Report reflects what has been our most impactful year to date—one defined not just by numbers, but by lives transformed, said the CEO of Cure Blindness Project, K-T Overbey.

The report also highlighted the organisation’s continued investment in building sustainable eye health systems by training local clinicians, equipping partner health facilities and expanding community-based eye care to ensure long-term access to quality services.

“Our work goes beyond individual procedures. We are strengthening entire systems so that quality eye care becomes a lasting reality in the communities we serve,” Overbey added.

Cure Blindness Project said it operates in several African countries, including Nigeria, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as countries in South Asia and South America.

The report, it was learnt, also features photographs and stories highlighting the experiences of patients and frontline healthcare providers, while a full 2025 Annual Report, including the organisation’s financial statements and recognition of donors and volunteers, is expected to be released later this year.

Founded as the Himalayan Cataract Project, Cure Blindness Project said it has spent more than 30 years restoring sight globally.

It added that, working with partners, it has provided more than two million sight-restoring surgeries and screenings and basic eye care to more than 20 million people across more than 30 countries.
