NGX Expects Fewer Than 10 New Listings Despite Dangote Refinery’s $1.6bn IPO

Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) expects fewer than 10 companies to list on the stock market over the next 12 months despite the anticipated impact of Dangote Refinery’s $1.6 billion initial public offering.

NGX Group Chief Executive Officer Temi Popoola disclosed the outlook as the exchange seeks to attract more companies and expand investor participation in Nigeria’s capital market.

According to Reuters, Popoola identified the growing availability of private financing as one of the factors limiting the number of businesses seeking public listings.

The projection highlights a challenge facing Nigeria’s equity market, where rising investor interest has not necessarily translated into a corresponding increase in the number of publicly traded companies.

Dangote Refinery’s planned share offering represents an opportunity to attract investors interested in Nigeria’s energy and industrial sectors.

The refinery is expected to broaden investment opportunities on the exchange, which has traditionally attracted significant investor interest through banking, telecommunications and other established sectors.

However, the anticipated listing is unlikely to resolve the wider challenge of encouraging privately owned companies to raise capital through the stock market.

Businesses considering a public offering must weigh the benefits of accessing equity financing against disclosure requirements, regulatory obligations and the costs associated with maintaining a public listing.

Private financing arrangements can offer companies an alternative source of capital without immediately exposing them to the reporting and ownership requirements associated with publicly traded securities.

For NGX, this creates competition for companies seeking funding, particularly businesses that can secure substantial investment from private equity firms and other institutional investors.

Popoola also expects Dangote Refinery’s offering to encourage greater participation among retail investors, with the potential to increase the number of active investors in Nigeria’s stock market.

The exchange is exploring opportunities to extend participation beyond Nigeria through connections with other African capital markets.

Such arrangements could allow a broader pool of investors to participate in major Nigerian offerings, although their effectiveness will depend on market infrastructure, regulatory coordination and investor demand.

The expected increase in retail participation could improve trading activity and market liquidity if new investors continue buying and selling securities after the offering.

Nevertheless, attracting more investors and attracting more listed companies remain separate challenges for the exchange.

While Dangote Refinery’s IPO could strengthen market activity, sustained growth in the number of listed businesses will depend on whether public equity financing becomes more attractive to companies seeking long-term capital.
