Oil Prices Rise Above $114 As Middle East Conflict Threatens Global Supply

Crude oil prices climbed above $114 per barrel on Friday as escalating hostilities in the Middle East heightened concerns over disruptions to global petroleum supplies.

Brent crude oil, the international benchmark for Nigerian crude oil, rose 1.2% to $114.47 per barrel at 07:39 a.m., while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 1.4% to $100.84 per barrel.

The increase followed renewed security threats involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, raising concerns about the safety of energy infrastructure and oil shipments across the region.

Reports that Saudi Aramco evacuated its headquarters in Dhahran added to market uncertainty as traders assessed the possibility of further attacks on oil facilities.

Saudi Arabia remains one of the world’s largest crude oil exporters, making developments affecting its production and export infrastructure particularly important to international energy markets.

Any prolonged disruption to Saudi crude shipments could tighten global supplies and increase competition among buyers seeking alternative sources.

Oil markets are also monitoring developments in Libya, where supply disruptions have added to concerns about the availability of crude from major producing countries.

The latest gains extend a period of rising oil prices driven by geopolitical tensions and fears that supply interruptions could persist.

For Nigeria, higher crude prices could improve the value of petroleum exports and strengthen government revenue if production and export volumes remain stable.

The country relies on crude oil earnings for a substantial portion of its foreign exchange inflows, making sustained price increases potentially beneficial to external revenue.

However, higher international oil prices can also increase the cost of petroleum products, particularly where domestic prices are influenced by global crude and refined fuel markets.

This creates competing economic effects for Nigeria, with potential improvements in export earnings occurring alongside pressure on transportation, manufacturing and household energy costs.

The impact on government revenue will also depend on Nigeria’s actual crude production, export volumes and the fiscal assumptions underlying its budget.

For global markets, attention remains focused on whether the latest security developments will translate into sustained production losses or shipping disruptions.

Traders are expected to monitor developments involving Saudi energy facilities, regional shipping routes and output from other oil-producing countries as they assess the direction of crude prices.

The continued rise in oil prices reflects the premium investors are placing on supply security amid uncertainty over the duration and potential economic consequences of the Middle East conflict.
