Quentin Halys produced the biggest victory of his career at the Rolex Paris Masters, defeating seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling three-set encounter after saving four match points.
The Frenchman delighted the home crowd with a remarkable comeback, winning 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9) in a match that could easily have gone the American’s way.
Halys made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-3 and putting Tiafoe under pressure. However, the American responded in the second set, raising his level and winning it 6-1 to force a deciding set.
The final set delivered the real drama. Tiafoe appeared close to securing the victory, but Halys refused to give up. The Frenchman saved four match points in the deciding-set tiebreak before eventually getting over the line 11-9.
It was a huge moment for Halys, who secured one of the most memorable wins of his career in front of his home supporters. Beating a player of Tiafoe’s quality on such a big stage makes the achievement even more significant.
For Tiafoe, it was a painful exit from the tournament. The American had opportunities to close out the match but could not find a way past a determined Halys, who showed tremendous composure when the pressure was at its highest.
The victory sends Halys through to the next round of the Paris Masters and gives the Frenchman a major confidence boost as he continues his campaign in front of his home crowd.
