Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has said it is insulting for United States lawmakers to propose sanctions on Rabiu Kwankwaso over his role in implementing Sharia law during his tenure as Governor of Kano State.

In a post shared on his X handle, Ahmad argued that Sharia is not a criminal concept and that its implementation does not constitute an offense warranting punitive action against any individual.

He maintained that associating the proposed visa restrictions with Sharia enforcement misrepresents both the legal and religious context of the policy.

The post reads, “It is insulting to suggest that the United States lawmakers proposed the visa ban on Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso simply because he implemented Sharia during his tenure as Governor of Kano State in 2000.

“Sharia is not a criminal concept, nor is its implementation an offense that warrants punitive measures against any individual.”

DAILY POST reports that Kwankwaso has reportedly been targeted for sanctions under legislation introduced by the US Congress over his alleged role in promulgating Sharia law in Kano State.
