Six opposition parties have fixed August 31 Summit to discuss alliance against Tinubu ahead of 2027 election.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that six Nigerian opposition parties have scheduled a summit for August 31, 2026, to begin formal negotiations on possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 general election.
The participating parties are the African Democratic Congress, ADC; Allied Peoples Movement, APM; National Democratic Congress, NDC; Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; Peoples Redemption Party, PRP; and Social Democratic Party, SDP.
Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday on behalf of the G100.
According to Lukman, the summit will be held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja and will bring together leaders and major stakeholders from the six opposition parties.
He said its immediate objective was to establish a formal structure through which the parties could negotiate the principles, institutions and terms of possible cooperation before the 2027 elections.
The summit is not expected to select a presidential candidate or determine the final structure of an opposition alliance at its first meeting.
Lukman explained that the gathering followed several weeks of direct consultations with the leadership of the participating parties.
The consultations produced a shared briefing titled “A Framework for Opposition Cooperation and Coordination,” which identified areas of agreement while recognising the distinct histories, identities and political interests of the parties.
“Cooperation does not require any party to disappear into another. The first question before party leaders is not who leads the ticket. It is what we are, together, prepared to do for this country,” Lukman stated.
He said the discussions were driven by a shared recognition that Nigeria required a credible, organised and competitive opposition.
One of the proposals to be considered at the summit is the creation of five specialised working groups.
Subject to the approval of the participating parties, the groups will have four weeks to develop the documents and agreements required to formalise areas of cooperation.
Expected participants include national chairmen, party leaders, members of the respective National Working Committees, presidential candidates, running mates and other stakeholders.
Members of the House of Representatives Minority Caucus who are signatories to the G100 initiative are also expected to participate.
The G100 clarified that it would act strictly as a facilitator and observer, rather than interfere with the constitutional authority or internal decision-making processes of the political parties.
Any resolutions emerging from the negotiations will remain subject to the approval of the participating parties.
The planned summit represents an initial attempt to build a coordinated opposition platform capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
However, the success of the initiative will depend on whether the parties can reach agreements on leadership, candidate selection, power sharing and a common electoral strategy
