Super Falcons Return Home Amid WAFCON Uncertainty

Nigeria’s senior women’s team, the Super Falcons, have returned home as questions continue over the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to confirm if the tournament will go ahead in Morocco as planned. Originally, the competition – which also serves as Africa’s qualifier for the FIFA Women’s World Cup – was set for March 17 to April 3, 2026.

With less than two weeks to kick-off, there has been no official update from CAF. Important pre-tournament preparations, such as media accreditation and formal announcements, have also not taken place, leaving teams in limbo.

    • The Super Falcons of Nigeria launched their campaign for a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2024) title in emphatic fashion, thanks to a clinical display from their attacking stars in a 3-0 win over Tunisia

The Super Falcons had planned to travel straight from Cameroon to Morocco after their two-legged friendlies. This trip was meant to mark the start of their official WAFCON training camp.

A source close to the team said the plan changed because of the uncertainty. “The team was meant to travel to Morocco for the official camp. But with the tournament unclear, they were told to return home after the Cameroon matches,” the source explained.

The source added that this also affected player selection. “If the team had gone to Morocco, players like Anderline would have joined ahead of the final squad selection. Since the team returned home, some players were not needed for the friendly due to other commitments,” they said.

So far, CAF has not issued any statement to clarify the tournament’s status, leaving the Super Falcons and fans waiting for answers.
