Syria on Sunday condemned an attack on the United Arab Emirates’ Embassy in Damascus, saying “such actions will be met with firm legal measures.”

Peaceful demonstrations are a legitimate right guaranteed by law as a form of expressing opinions, Syria’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry affirmed, however, that the attack during recent protests is a “reprehensible and unacceptable act, constituting a clear violation of national laws.”

Dozens of protesters gathered Friday in front of the embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Damascus. Some attempted to storm the building, and videos posted online showed demonstrators tearing down the UAE flag.

Internal security units have begun reinforcing security measures around diplomatic missions and boosting their protection to ensure their safety and prevent any repeat of such an incident, the statement said.

An investigation into the incident is underway and those involved in the attack are being pursued, with legal procedures being followed against them in line with due process, said the ministry.

In a separate statement, Syria’s Interior Ministry announced late Sunday the arrest of two individuals “proven to be involved in an attack” Friday on the UAE embassy in Damascus.

It added that “the necessary legal procedures against the accused (are) underway in accordance with established protocols.”

The ministry emphasized that “any attack on diplomatic missions is a red line that cannot be tolerated” and that it “will remain vigilant and resolute in protecting these missions and ensuring respect for diplomatic norms.”
