A student of the University of Abuja, Miss Amra Onize, has emerged winner of the 2026 Amnesty International Nigeria Intervarsity Human Rights Debate.

Onize clinched the top position after weeks of intense debating rounds that began on April 15, featuring 24 universities across the country.

According to a statement on Monday by the organisation’s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, the first runner-up position went to Naomi Innocent Chikwuado of Imo State University, while Obodoefuna Ijeoma Cynthia of Madonna University came third.

Uwakfmfon Moses Etim of the University of Uyo finished as Fourth Runner-Up.

The statement partly read, “A student of University of Abuja Miss Amra Salihu Onize emerged winner of this year’s Amnesty International Nigeria Intervarsity Human Rights Debate. Amra Onize won after intense weeks of rounds of debate that started on 15 April, with 24 universities across Nigeria participating.

“The First Runner-Up is Naomi Innocent Chikwuado of Imo State University, the Second Runner-Up is Obodoefuna Ijeoma Cynthia of Madonna University, while the Third Runner-Up is Uwakfmfon Moses Etim, of University of Uyo. University of Port Harcourt and Veritas University Bwari made it to the six universities that participated in the debate. Jonathan Alewa from Gombe State University made a special presentation on the various dimensions of poverty and human rights.”

Sanusi said the debate reflects the organisation’s commitment to empowering young people to engage critically with human rights issues and national discourse.

He said the initiative, now in its fourth year, aims to promote critical thinking, dialogue, and youth participation in discussions on justice, accountability, and human dignity.

“This debate continues to grow in impact and reach each year. As a global human rights organisation, Amnesty Internationoal is committed to empowering young people to shape the discourse around justice, accountability, and human dignity,” Sanusi said.

Last year, Miss Goodluck Akinlawon of the University of Ibadan won the 2025 edition of the competition.
